Walking Fearlessly: Kathleen’s Inspiring Solo Journey on the Camino de Santiago at 66
December 18, 2024Solo at 58: Angela’s Fearless Journey to Antarctica

Hi all, Theresa Winters here! As promised, another fearless-female-traveler! Angela, who is the beautiful age of 58, set out to the southernmost continent on Earth, Antarctica!
These are the stories that make my heart smile. Here is just a glimpse of what Angela had to say about her journey.
What motivated you to take a solo trip?
This was a trip I really wanted to take, and not having a traveling companion I could go with, there weren’t really any other options. Life is short and you don’t know what might happen, so I decided to go while I was still young and healthy enough to do it.
What advice would you give to someone who’s hesitant about traveling solo for the first time?
Like Nike says “Just Do It”. I’m big on planning so I did a lot of research. This was a big trip, but I’ve done several road trips on my own, and enjoyed them. So if you’re hesitant, start small and take a weekend trip somewhere.

How did you prepare for your solo trip, both mentally and logistically?
I was concerned about the language barrier in Argentina, so I took a really short Spanish course in the summer, and got an App on my phone to try and practice. I did a lot of reading online, found a FB page that answered a lot of questions and helped me narrow down what to bring. I wasn’t originally planning on spending a day in Buenos Aires, but when my flight from there to Ushuaia was rescheduled to a time where I couldn’t make the connection I had to add on a day in the city. This turned in to a happy change as I spent a few hours walking around the City and then in the evening attended a dinner and tango show.
How did you decide on your destination?
I’ve had an interest in the polar regions for quite a long time, and have read several books about explorers. I didn’t realize that taking an expedition cruise was actually a thing until a couple months before I decided I wanted to go. Seeing other people’s photos of the pristine ice, and the mountains, and wildlife including seals, whales and especially penguins made me really want to go.
